MAJOR TOMS READY TO PEAK THIS WEEK

Fr Jun 17 – 10:00 am (ESPN)/14:00 GMT, 3:00 pm (NBC)/19:00 GMT, 5:00 pm (ESPN)/21:00 GMT

The second Major of the year is being played at Pinehurst No.2 this week, with armchair punters in for a treat of Sky blanket coverage on all four days. As for a bet, with none of the Big 4, or defending champion Retief Goosen, playing that well right now, we'll be pinning our hopes on a couple of in-form Americans this week. David Toms looks to be approaching peak-form at just the right time (3rd, 2nd, 8th last three starts) and is value at 25/1 in our Outright market. What's more, his relative lack of length off the tee will be no handicap this week. This is a course where accuracy and a deft touch around the greens will be key, and Toms scores well on both counts. I also expect a big show from Texan Justin Leonard, whose price of 50/1 is ridiculous considering he's a dual winner this year, and has the advantage of being a past winner of a Major (1997 Open). He also has form at Pinehurst, where he finished a respectable 15th in 1999, and he'll be relishing another crack at the course.

Of the Big 4, Tiger will have his backers at 5/1, but the chances are you'll be able to beat those odds in-play. The same comment applies to Phil Mickelson, although the 10/1 in our Enhanced Win Only market is tempting, if only as a saver. Phil has to be a factor this week based on his excellent US Open record, including a runner-up spot at Pinehurst last time. In our 'Top American' market, I like the look of Jeff Maggert at 50/1. Jeff has been a solid performer in US Opens down the years (six top-tens), but is an unlikely winner, so this is the best way to support him (1/4 odds 1.2.3.4).

The first players tee off at about noon on Thursday, so make sure you get your specialty bets on before then. Our outright market will be available in-play throughout, however, so the more patient among you may wish to wait before placing your bets. If so, the advice is not to look too far down the leader board. The tough nature of the US Open set-up makes it difficult to play catch-up. In the last six years the winner has been 1st or tied-1st at halfway five times.

US Open Picks:

Outright: David Toms @ 25/1; Justin Leonard @ 50/1; Phil Mickelson @ 10/1 (Enhanced Odds)
Top American: Jeff Maggert @ 50/1

BIFFLE COULD BE THE CAPED CRUSADER

Su Jun 19 – 1:30 pm (FOX)/17:30 GMT
The NASCAR Nextel Cup Series continues this weekend from Michigan International Speedway, as the teams battle in the Batman Begins 400 (the race is sponsored by the expected blockbuster movie). And, this is a track where Ford have dominated throughout the last 20 years. Not only have they won the last two drivers championships, but they are dominating NASCAR's horsepower tracks, of which Michigan is one, and that dominance is likely to continue this week. To get a good idea of which of their drivers will do well this week, it will pay to look at the last few Michigan races, and also at what happened in California earlier this season. The two tracks are nearly identical in width and banking and require the same car set-ups. As the winner of the last race at each track, Greg Biffle is the first driver that springs to mind, and it's no surprise he's 11/2 favorite this week. He's certainly got the most horsepower and, as there is less chance of engine failure over this relatively short 400 mile trip, he's going to be extremely tough to beat. Like Biffle, Kurt Busch has also done the double back in 03, and is another who's sure to be competing for the win at a best priced 12/1. For an outside bet, I like the look of Dale Jarrett at a pre-practice price of 22/1. Jarrett seems to save his best for Michigan, winning four times in his career, but arguably putting up his best performances last year when coming third in both races on the track, in a season when he wasn't very good overall.

Nigel's Checkered Flag: Greg Biffle @ 11/2; Dale Jarrett @ 22/1 (Each-way 1/4 odds 1.2.3)

bet365 selected Batman Returns 400 prices … Greg Biffle 11/2, Jimmie Johnson 7/1, Jeff Gordon, Kasey Kahne 8/1, Ryan Newman, Mark Martin 10/1, Kurt Busch 12/1, others on bet365 website.

PISTONS START PUMPING IN GAME 3
******************************
Th Jun 16 – 9:00 pm (ABC)/Jun 17 – 01:00 GMT
Fr Jun 19 – 9:00 pm (ABC)/Jun 20 – 01:00 GMT
Detroit came alive on their return to the Palace in Game 3, to capture a 96-79 win as 3.5-point favorite (from 4), while the 'over' appeared for the second time in a row, as the 175 points combined points jumped 'over' the 170.5-point total. Significantly, Manu Ginobili, after dominating Games 1 and 2, was a non-factor for the Spurs after damaging his knee in a collision early in the game. Overall, San Antonio maintains a 2-1 advantage in the best-of-seven series. Not for the first time though, Detroit have started playing after falling two behind in a series. They fell behind to the Pacers 2-1 in the Eastern Conference semi-finals, and again in the East finals against Miami. And, with the next two games being played in Motown, Detroit have the chance to win two more games before going back to San Antonio for Games 6 and 7 at SBC Center, if necessary. Detroit's home record is now 40-11 SU, 29-21 ATS. Going into Game 4, we list the Pistons as 3.5-point favorites with a total of 172. Once the action tips-off, we'll have live in-play betting available.

Previous Pick: San Antonio @ 10/27; Spurs to win 4-2 @ 5/2

Get in the game and be lucky!
