BANK ON SERGIO FOR CLASSIC

On course form and current form, Sergio Garcia simply has to be backed for this week's Barclays Classic at 8/1. Twice a winner from five starts here, and an incredible 50 under par for his 20 rounds, the only doubt is whether he's got over his US Open exploits, where he finished in a tie for 3rd, only a week after winning the Booz Allen. Still, the evidence is so compelling that it would be foolish to leave him out of any staking plan this week. He is second favorite to Vijay Singh (4/1), who is also a dual winner here (back in 1993 & 1995), but Garcia has finished ahead of Singh on all five occasions they have played together at Westchester, and this week will be no different (live in-play betting available, including 'End Of Round Leader').

Tournament Pick: Sergio Garcia @ 8/1

This week sees the NASCAR drivers going head-to-head in the Dodge / Save Mart 350 from Infineon Raceway, in the wine country of Sonoma, CA. With the majority of NASCAR's races taking place on left-turning oval tracks, the two road races each season provide the drivers with a unique challenge; they have to make right turns. For some drivers, that challenge is too much, and their teams are able to bring in replacements for the regular drivers to improve results. Make no mistake, these 'hired hands' are in the race to win, so it would be foolish to rule them out of calculations. And, the best of them this week could be ace driver Ron Fellows (10/1), and Scott Pruett (9/1), who looks to have the best in the way of equipment.

Of the regular drivers, only a handful can be seriously fancied to take the checkered flag and, as in any road race, Jeff Gordon merits the utmost respect on a track where he's four victories in his past 10 starts and five other top-6 finishes. The problem for his potential backers this week is whether to ignore his current slump in form. Last week's 32nd place finish at MIS was his fourth result worse than 30th in his past five starts, in what has been a poor season by his standards. Of course, he'll be glad to be going back to Samona but, at odds of only 10/3, we'll give him a miss this week. Instead, with the Roush cars continuing to dominate the season, we'll take a chance on Mark Martin (8/1) to record his first victory this year in what is his final tour of the Cup circuit. (last week's tip, Greg Biffle, won at 11/2).

Nigel's Checkered Flag: Mark Martin @ 8/1

YEAR OF THE ESKIMO'S

Winnepeg Bluebombers v. Saskatchewan Roughriders
Sa Jun 25 – 10:00 pm (TSN)/Jun 26 – 02:00 GMT
The new CFL season got under way on Wednesday night with the Tiger-Cats playing the Alouettes in Montreal (score 32-21 to the Alouettes). This year's race for the 2005 CFL Grey Cup looks to be one of the most open for years, with at least five legitimate contenders, headed by the Edmonton Eskimos at 9/4. Last year's defending champions, the Toronto Argonauts (7/2), begin their defence at home on Saturday against the BC Lions, a rematch of last season's Grey Cup (live in-play betting available). And, as was the case in Ottawa last November, the Argos can expect to see plenty of Lions QB Dave Dickenson. Dickenson struggled for most of last season but has been impressing in training, and takes over from the CFL's most outstanding player last year, Casey Printers, who is nursing a toe injury. The bad news for Dickenson and the Lions is that the Argos' defense remains intact for 2005, but they'll still present a formidable challenge. Saturday's other two games has the Eskimos (-12.0) at home to the Renegades, and the Roughriders (-7.5) playing host to the Bluebombers.

Live Game Pick: BC Lions (-2.0) @ 10/11

The Chicago White Sox are playing really well right now, which bodes well for their chances as they move into the final leg of Interleague Play, with the crosstown classic against the Cubs to be played out this weekend, at U.S. Cellular Field. Wednesday's 5-1 victory over the Royals, their seventh straight victory in this 12-game homestand, improved the South Siders record to 49-22 and, coupled with losses by Minnesota and Cleveland, gave them firm control of the American League. The win also completed a three-game sweep of the Royals, and extended the White Sox win streak over Kansas City to nine games in 2005 and 10 in a row, dating back to 2004. With the White Sox playing near-perfect baseball for the past week, they're going to be tough to beat this weekend (live in-play betting available).
